My great grandmother was an antiques dealer in the Pacific Northwest for many years. She passed away in the 1980\'s but left behind an attic full of treasures that we are only now sorting out.
This antique nightgown was found in a box labelled \"1790\'s - early 1900\'s\". There were several items in the box, both infant and ladies\' sizes. The label, I have to say, isn\'t very helpful, since I don\'t have a clue which might be the earlier pieces and which might be later. So I\'m splitting the difference and calling it all \"Victorian\" with the hopes that any serious clothing collectors will know the difference, and might even write to tell me so that I can improve my listings.
This is a wonderful item, very romantic and not at all the sort of thing you could find easily these days. This long, airy slip or petticoat has ruffled and pin-tuck details that would look absolutely charming peeking out from under an over-skirt. The narrow waist fastens with a single button at the back. Serious quality from back in the day when people knew how to hand-sew!
I am finding it hard to accurately give it a size. I put \"small\" in the listing, and I think that is about right, though the waist is very narrow. If you are into historical costuming, you know all about corsets, or you may have these measurements naturally. If you are clever at sewing, you could probably adjust the size, too. All measurements are approximate, and taken as the garment lay flat, so double them for the round measurement. The length from waist band to hem is 32.5\", and the waist, measured flat, is 11.5\"
Condition: All of these items have some minor imperfections, like little spots and pinprick holes, as would be expected in items of such age. The side seams on this one are slightly frayed in places and need to be re-stitched. You may want to have the item professionally cleaned, as there is a cluster of spots (see pictures). At any distance, none of these imperfections are noticeable, and overall this is in very good antique condition.
This would be a lovely thing to wear for any historical reenactment occasion. Or include it in a display of antique sewing items, or general Victoriana. In any case, this is too nice to sit in an attic box any longer.
Shipping is for the lower 48 only. If you live outside this area, or outside the U.S. please write to me for a shipping quote before offerding. I will be listing all of the contents of this particular attic box over the coming days, and will be happy to combine shipping. Just request a final invoice from me and I\'ll give you the total.
