This is a beautiful, full-sized violin labeled \"JTL Geronimo Barnabetti\". It has a one-piece back, nicely flamed, It had not been played in over a half century, but has now been set up with a new soundpost, bridge, chinrest and strings. I believe it is an excellent instrument for an intermediate level player.
I purchased the instrument at an estate sale from the daughter of the previous owner. The daughter had no idea that her mother had the violin, or any information about the instrument itself, and was surprised to discover it among her mother\'s possessions. Most likely it was stored in her mother\'s closet all those years.
The violin was quite dusty and dirty, and needed attention so that it could once again by played. After using violin cleaner and polish to remove the external dust/dirt, I took the violin to my favorite luthier to have a new bridge and soundpost installed ($170), then set up the instrument with a new chin rest ($45) and a high-end set of Pirastro Oliv violin strings ($129). Per the luthier, the shoulder repair and area by the \"f\" hole are tight repairs - no need for any work or adjustment - so there was no need to fix anything on the violin itself.
The violin does not come with a bow, but it has an old case suitable for shipping.
In researching this instrument I found listing on Skinner\'s sale site for instruments with the same label, and which look quite similar. In 2003 a violin labeled JTL Barnabetti violin sold for $1,500. I could not find more recent sales to determine how much it had appreciated in the last 13 years, but I would imagine it is now worth considerably more.
Just as with the majority of older violins, there is no way to know if this instrument is an authentic JTL Geronimo Barnabetti as it is labeled so please offer accordingly.
