This heavy weight leather fire helmet was made in the 1920\'s in New York City. We are uncertain of the maker since the maker\'s disc on the inside of the helmet is blank. We believe this helmet was made by Cairns and Bro of New York. Overall condition of the helmet is excellent with only minor age staining and tears in the felt lining. There is no wire showing or anydeformity to the helmet other than age and minor use scarring, all which is evident in the photos. Felt liner has earflaps and you can see in the photos some minor tearing where it attaches to the helmet. This condition only adds to thecharacter of this fine working helmet. Brass eagle has nodenting or splitting and is in excellent condition. There is a maker\'s name on the right base ofthe eagle which reads: SPAWN & CO. N.Y. We believe that Olson bought out Spawn and that Cairns bought out Olson. It wascommon for fire helmet companies in those days to interchange parts from companies they had taken over. We believe that may bethe case here. Leather front piece has the metalsupport strap with the Cairns maker\'s name imprinted on the back. As you can see in the photo, this helmet is from Engine 282 which is located in theboro park area of Brooklyn...This well known fire company celebrated it\'s 100th anniversary in May of last year. Front shield has the fireman\'s ID #3748 asyou can see in the photo. We are sure there are experts out there who can identify the fireman who owned this helmet. This is a great piece in exceptional condition. It is not often you find such a collectable as this helmet from a world class firefighting company. They don\'t get any better than this.
