This is a very early MODEL 1902 U.S. ARMY SABER. This particular saber was manufactured by PETTIBONE BROS, CINCINNATI, OHIO probably around 1910-1920. I believe PETTIBONE was only in the military accessories and accoutrement manufacturing during this period. The blade is quite nice and 3/4\'s engraved, but it does have some fine scratches on it, mostly on the area that is not engraved, from the point back about 1/3 the length of the blade. The engraved portion of the blade is very nice and detailed with the engraved name \"T.J. Kipp\" (I am not sure of the initials \"T.J.\" since is it done in early script), but the last name \"Kipp\" is very legible. The guard shows some minor scuffs and scratches and most of the guard has a freckling of light oxidation on it. I believe this will clean up, I can\'t see any rust. The buffalo horn handle is quite nice. The handle has two small chips down near the ring at the crossguard area. There are also a couple of scuffs on the sides of the handles, not real bad, but noticeable. These scuffs on the horn may clean off also. The scabbard is dent free and straight just like the blade of the saber. The throat area of the scabbard is brass and the body looks like nickel silver or chrome. Lots of finish wear near the two hanging rings with scattered finish loss down the rest of the scabbard. Light freckling of oxidation, scratches and scuffs on the scabbard, it looks old and worn, but not abused or damaged. Overall, I would rate the saber as GOOD TO VERY GOOD and the scabbard as GOOD. The name KIPP needs to be researched, I am not sure if this person was enlisted of an officer. This sword has been in storage for around 12-15 years and was just purchased for an old stored collection. THIS SABER AND SCABBARD HAVE NOT BEEN CLEANED OR EVEN WIPED DOWN, THEY ARE JUST AS FOUND ON 14 APRIL 2014.
