IDED 1st. VIRGINIA CAVALRY BRITISH ANTLER HANDLED DAMASCUS BLADE BOWIE,KNIFE, COMPANY D,CLARK COUNTY, VIRGINIA

This imported British Bowie knife with a damascusblade & antler grip was used by Private & Commissary Sergeant JamesWatson*1 when he served in Company D Clark Cavalry, 1st VirginiaCavalry*2 from July 1861 to April 1865. Itis 13 5/8” long with a beautiful 8 5/8” Bowie damascus blade, large brassguard, antler grip & a brass pommel cap cast in the shape of a lion’s headholding a 1 1/8” brass ring.

It.in very good condition with the bladehaving beautiful demascus patterns, the guard & pommel cap have a dark bronzepatina & the antler grip is in good condition. It was bought directlyfrom the Watson family by Ellis Edmond Bayliss in 1958 who had a very largecollection of Civil War & Virginia artifacts. .

James Watson enlisted in the Clark Cavalry thatbecame Company D, 1st. Virginia Cavalry on July 14, 1861 as aprivate. He was promoted to Commissary Sergeanton May 2, 1862. Assigned to the CharlottesvilleHospital from August 29 to October 21, 1863 & again from November 23 toDecember 30, 1863.with Typhoid Fever. Hefought in every battle with the 1st. Virginia Cavalry from July 1861to August 1863 & from January 1864 to April 1865. He waswounded at the Battle of Darbytown, Virginia in Henrico County, Virginia onOctober 7, 1864 & again at the Battle of Cool Spring/Castleman’s Ferry inClark County. He wasparoled on April 20, 1865 in Winchester Virginia. See his Confederate madecavalry saber from this same collection listed separately. I also have his French pin fire revolver but I can not list it due to s restrictive firearms policy.

*The 1st Virginia Cavalry completed its organization atWinchester,Virginia, in July 1861, under the command of ColonelJames Ewell Brown(J.E.B.) Stuartat the command of GeneralThomas Jackson. Unlike most regiments, the Firstcontained twelvecompanies from the counties of Amelia, Augusta, Washington.

Aftertaking part in more than 200 engagements of various types including First Battle of BullRun,theSeven Days BattlesandStuart\'s ride aroundMcClellan. Theregiment was active in the conflicts atGainesville,Second Bull Station,Gettysburg,Bristoe Station,the Wilderness,Todd\'s Tavern,Spotsylvania,Bethesda Church,andCold Harbor. Later it was involved inJubalEarly\'soperations in the ShenandoahValley, thedefense of Petersburg, and theAppomattox Campaign.
