George Francis Towle - Enlisted 9/11/1861 as a 1st Lieutenant, on 9/18/1861 he was commissionedinto \"B\" Co. NH 4th Infantry. Mustered out on 8/23/1865 at Raleigh, NC.Promotions:Capt 1/17/1862Major 1/3/1865Lt Col. 4/22/1865 (Lt Colonel & Asst Inspector General)Capt 3/2/1867Major 3/2/1867
Description : Inscribed U.S. Model 1850 Field & Staff Officer\'s Sword / Iron Scabbard. Ames Mfg. Co., Chicopee, Mass. Inscription\"G.F. Towle / Sept 18th 1861\". His sword is of the standard M1850 Field & Staff pattern, and is 36\" overall, including a 30 1/2\" blade. The obverse of the blade shows typical shows typical etched floral patterns with an eagle and shield, and the reverse has scrolls with \"U.S.\". The cast brass half-basket hilt ispierced with \"U.S.\" and the grips are of fish skin, wire wrapped. The all metal scabbard is 33\" overall, being fitted with narrow brass mounts 6 1/2\" apart, while the drag is etched on the obverse ricasso with the maker\'s markings. Condition : Towle\'s sword is in good condition, and shows normal wear and use. Appx. 30% of the original gilt remains onthehilt, with the grips and wire wrappingintact. Some discoloration is present on the blade, but no pitting. The scabbard is very good, with a patina on the brass mounts. This is a fine historic carried by an officer who was always in the \"thick of the fighting\". Accompanied by numerousarchive records, post war photograph copy and other historical documents.
