Welcome!

Click here to watch this item.Offered... an important early bolo by one of the best early Zuni silversmiths: Mary Kallestewa. It\'s spectacular, more detailed and more special than any in the book that depicts asimilar piece, but still covering all those basics while adding more refined aspects. The different elements include the hopi rain cloud wings and sun face at the waist. So its a more important piece, while it maintains her documented crest shape and her inlay style, the square shoulders, the inlay design we see in the arms and chest and the silver work with the hand twisted wire with raindrops. The use of stones is also very special as it includes melon or clam shell with the abalone which lookedlikemother of pearl at first but it has more rich coloration, along with the red abalone, jet and turquoise. The addition of the sun face imagery near the waist may relate to the circle we see in all the Vacit Hopi Bird or Thunderbird pieces. I have not seen another of Mary Kallestewa\'s wonderful work on bird bolos that is this elaborate and excellent that is published. I consider this one the best example, absolutely gorgeous, and very rare indeed. We note theminimalism she uses. The sun face doesn\'t have mouth, eyes or forehead separation and yet has just enough detail that we know it\'s a sun face.
Mary Kallestewa was one of the best Zuni artists of the CG Wallace period, a very important early contributor and a truly great master. Sister of Juanita Homer, she worked at Zuni trader C. G. Wallace\'s post with her husband Lapelle. Not a lot of Zuni women were publicly working at that time. For example one of the most famous, Della Casa Appa, had to sneak in at night! Known for her mosaic overlay, her work is characterizedby geometric designs that were influenced by the archaeological dig at Hawiiku. Mary Kallestewa was a seminalcontributor to the genre and made some of the most beautiful pieces in all the history of the art. This is a prime example.
Details: The bolo itself measures 2-9/16\" high x 1-7/8 wide. The hand made tips are 2-1/8\" high and the tie measures end to end with tips at 36\" long. This piece is unsigned and not marked forsilvercontent which is usual for pieces of this age.The condition is excellent vintage, wearable and collectible. The tips do have several dings but I would not consider changing them because they are hand made originals.
Perhaps made for a Zuni who participated in the rain dances, probably a piece originallyintended forinternal use, for another tribe member.
The attribution is certain that this is Mary Kallestewa\'s work and there are similar published pieces with the same attribution. This is a piece I consider museum worthy and unique; suitable for the best collections. There is a delicacy and refinement to this piece that reflects the elegance of this woman and her work. It hasbecomemy signature bolo in recent times. It\'s superb!
