This is a large basket measuring about 10 1/2\" to the top of the lid & about 13\" across the upper rim. The carved soapstone finial lookslike a seabird (possibly a cormorant with its beak tucked under its wing).Note: the condition is fair, there is some damage to the outer wrapping of grass on the top & bottom edge. It is missing in some sections & the inner grass strands are being held in place withwhite thread.Sea Lyme grass for basket making grows best along the east coast of Hudson\'s Bay where it is harvested in early spring while still pliable, then carefully dried and stored to prevent mildew, but dampened again while it is being worked.
