  • JamesReed (1793-1878) began working early on his father\'s farm near Washington,Pennsylvania, where he developed a taste for mechanics, Early on his father\"caught\" him in the field making computations for clock wheelsonthe soles of his shoes...his father exclaimed \"Oh, Jimmie, Jimmie, willyou never amount to anything\".

Jameswent on to become an excellent mechanic in several branches. He also was acabinet maker, silversmith, watch and watch case maker, engraver, and maker ofengineering and mathematical instruments. In 1849 he took his son James intothe business and named it James Reed & Co., which continued for 29 yearsuntil his death. His compasses are hard to find; I have found and documentedonly four so far.
