JAPANESE HANGING SCROLL Antique \"Mt Fuji Landscape\"

by Tani Buncho,

c.1790, Edo Period

style=\"line-height: 20.7999992370605px;\">

This is a very handsome Hanging Scroll with venerable painting on silk by the renowned artist,

Tani Buncho. I believe that he made this painting around 1790, after the death his Teacher, Kato

Bunrei. The elegantly simple mounting is original to the painting

Tani Buncho, born in 1763, was a Japanese literati (bunjin) painter and poet, and was the son of

thepoet Tani Rokkoku (1729-1809). As his family were retainers of the Tayasu Family and

descendants of the eighth Tokugawa shogun, Buncho inherited samurai status and received a

stipend to meet the responsibilities this entailed. In his youth he began studying the painting

techniques of the Kano school under Kato Bunrei (1706-82). After Bunrei\'s death, Buncho worked

with masters of other schools, and developed a wide stylistic range that included many Chinese,

Japanese and European idioms. He is best known for his crisp landscapes in the literati style

(Nanga or Bunjinga).

Like most bunjinga painters of his time, Buncho focused largely on Chinese-inspired paintings.

Since travel outside Japan was forofferden under the Tokugawa shogunate, Buncho was unable to

study in China; he spent many years in Nagasaki, therefore, studying Chinese art and Western art

with the traders there. Watanabi Tasand and Takaku Aigai were among his disciples.

Buncho\'s works are in nearly every major collection around the world including the Metropolitan

Museum of Art in New York, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Ashmolean Museum, the

British Museum and every important collection in Japan.

The Kano school is one of the most famous schools of Japanese painting. It was founded by Kano

Masanobu (1434-1530), a contemporary of Sesshu and student of Shubun.

Kano painters often composed very flat pictures, but they balanced impeccably detailed realistic

depictions of animals and other subjects in the foreground with abstract, often entirely blank,

clouds and other background elements. The use of negative space to indicate distance, and to imply

mist, clouds, sky or sea is drawn from traditional Chinese modes and is used beautifully by the

Kano artists.

This is exactly what we have in the present painting: in the foreground a Pine Tree and white

blooming Ume Tree and in the far distance, Mt Fuji rising majestically with the sun just beginning

to rise behind it. But most of the picture plane is left blank, just the silk, to imply the space between

the trees and the sacred peak.

I especially admire Buncho\'s great economy of means in achieving his image, especially his subtle

representation of Mt Fuji using the technique of sotogama, using shading around a form rather

than painting the form itself. It is a very suggestive technique, and Buncho uses it here masterfully.

I also enjoy his delicately balanced palette and the touches of bright color in the Rising Sun, the

Pine and the blooming Ume Tree.

This scroll measures 65 inches long by 17 3/8 wide, not including the roller ends which are of wood.

There is no serious damage to this painting whatsoever. It has obviously been carefully conserved

by its successive owners over its some 224 years of life. There are a number of small spots across

thesurface of the painting. Most of them are small splashes from Buncho\'s brush; a few may be

foxing.

The Mounting is also in relatively good condition for its age. The top and bottom portions are made

of a dark bronze colored silk. The part surrounding the painting is of a fine brocade with a dark

royal blue ground and a small design of flowers and birds in lighter colored threads. And the two

borders at the top and bottom of the painting have a diamond shaped motif in dull gold and what I

believe to be a Mon, or family crest, in metallic gold.

This Mon may indicate that the scroll was commissioned and/or destined for a specific Samurai

family. I include a close up of this Mon at the very end of the list of photos.

The elegant and restrained mounting does show some wear, especially in the bottom portion. But I

think it well worth conserving as it is original to the painting and still serves it very well.

This scroll is a very good thing.

The photos give a very good idea of the excellence and particular charm of this scroll with its

painting on silk by Tani Buncho from around 1790 in the Edo Period.

And thanks for looking.

This scroll is around 224 or so years old and has passed through many difficult times including two World Wars, the Second of which was disastrous for its native country. For an unframed work on such a delicate support as silk, it is remarkable that it has survived at all, let alone in such good condition. But this scroll and similar works of art are not in absolutely perfect condition and they frequently show evidence of their long life. I endeavor to point out if and where there may be any damage, but the photographs tell the whole story. Please examine them carefully. If you are looking for something with absolutely no signs of age, I am afraid you will have to look elsewhere. In short, these beautiful scrolls were not born yesterday.

I indicate the artist\'s name based on a signature and/or seal and also the style, but occasionally a scroll may be a copy of a work by a famous painter. In the present case, I am sure that the painting is by Tani Buncho.

Due to limitations of photography and the inevitable differences in monitor settings, the color of the pictures on your monitor may be slightly different from the scrolls themselves, but I did my best to capture them as they are. And, at least on my monitor, the color is a perfect Mon in the style=\"color: rgb(255, 255, 255); font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Payment
