From a Tucson estate some years ago and an iconic period remembrance of later 20th Century American politics at the highest level is this original ink drawing regarding Ronald Reagan\'s long standing feud with the American Civil Liberties Union by Jules Feiffer. Jules Feiffer (Born 1929)) is a Pulitzer Prize winning editorial and satirical cartoonist for the Village Voice and his Feiffer comic strip was distributed nationally by the Hall Syndicate. He received an Academy Award for the short \"Munro\" in 1961 (he further wrote the screenplays for \"Carnal Knowledge\" and \"Popeye\"), an Obie Award for the play \"Little Murders\" in 1969, the mentioned Pulitzer Prize for his political cartoons in 1986, was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1995, was inducted into the Comic Book Hall of Fame and received the Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Cartoonist Society in 2004, and was awarded a lifetime achievement award from the Writers Guid of America in 2010. His illustrations for close friend Norton Juster\'s \"The Phantom Tollbooth\" are the stuff of legend. He has been called \"the most widely read satirist in the country\". This drawing, \"Ronald Reagan Welcomes You\", is a classic example of Feiffer\'s primary oeuvre - while it may reflects his generally liberal bias, its intentions are clearly more his take on the essence of Reagan\'s character than any negative point of view. Here, Reagan confronts the ACLU with no apparent fear - \"ACLU? Boo!\". I believe Reagan would have smiled. Considering the current national political climate, a thought to ponder. There is the original title in the lower margin, and a \"1982\" notation. Feiffer boldly signs within the drawing in the typical manner for this artist. As an aside, I had one of Paul Conrad\'s published cartoons depicting Barry Goldwater in 1963 (sold long ago on ) and still have a published Pat Elephant of Nelson Rockefeller which I may eventually offer. Condition is very good though not absolutely pristine perfect, having been in a frame at some point. The drawing itself remains strong and pretty much as Feiffer conceived it in the long ago. The drawing sheet is currently attached to an old paper mat at the extreme top and bottom edges by two relatively small pieces of tape (see pics). The mentioned mat has some minor faults at the extreme bottom edge from its former ill fitting frame, but has served well to protect Feiffer\'s actual drawing sheet. Frame up as-is or have the removal of that old tape addressed by any competent paper conservation specialist. There are some minor soft creases to the sheet above the drawing, seen under close inspection or in raking light. A couple of small minor handling cockles / soft creases near the sheet corners, nowhere near the drawing and mentioned only to be thorough, pretty much completes the picture. I\'m nitpicking for accuracy here, and a look at those pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition - a great Feiffer of a 1st rate political subject, ready for your wall. Drawing size is about 7 in. vertical and 6 1/2 in. horizontal including Feiffer\'s commentary at the bottom. The drawing sheet size is about 11 in. vertical and 8 1/2 in. horizontal. If you collect Mid 20th Century original editorial cartoon drawings by top tier listed artists and especially examples that translate well within the context of today\'s political debates, or simply wish a relevant Feiffer, this will have great meaning for you.
