This is a vintage/antique flame safety lamp made by the Koehler company of Marlboro,Massachusetts.
Design: Flamesafetylamps were used in mines and other areas were explosive gases could be present. The lamp burned normally until it came into contactwitha low oxygenEnvironmentand would suddenly go out with a pop or dim. This would alert theoperatorthat there was explosive gases in the air, and not to proceed any further. A normal lamp or flame would ignite the gas, spelling doom for everyone in thevicinity.
History: This lamp was originally designed for coal miners as stated before, however this model was adopted by the U.S Navy and Coast Guard for use in theenginerooms of vessels, were gas leaks could occur. This particular lamp for sale was used on the U.S.SIndependence (CV-62) aircraft carrier from the 1950\'s to the 1970\'s.
