And now here’s another Petalskin. A waltz-length nightie in the sort of perfectly pale pink you’d expect from Van Raalte. The label says this is a 32, which may indeed be true but Blondie isn’t the world’s smallest 34 and . . . well, judge for yourself. As for the other dimensions, while we’re on the subject: the waltz-length equals 44 inches, with an acceptable 66 inches of lace-trimmed hemline sweep. Between the skirt and the chiffon-backed lace 34” bodice is a prettily-shaped and bias-cut midriff section measuring anywhere between 26 and 30 inches. Whilst we don’t have to take the 32 too literally, there is only so much scope for lateral interpretation. The straps are pure lace between (only just) piped edges that, once they segue into the bodice, acquire a backing of the softest petalskin nylon. This is where your girls will be spending the night and, since they have checked into the Van Raalte Petalsk Inn for the night, they expect the highest possible levels of comfort. Any complaint at all, you can always ring down for room service. Simplicity is often an inherent part of these designs. Never overstated, because the clientele of the day expected delicacy and refinement. They bought Van Raalte to show they were delicate and refined . . . and they sure knew what they were doing. Several decades later, the timelessness of simple good design still earns top dollar. That and a reputation for quality materials and workmanship.
