Thisredware jar is decorated with rich brown and vibrant green and yellow glazes andis a fine example of the workmanship of the famous Pennsylvania potter, LesterBreininger, from Berks County, Pennsylvania.Lester Breininger, the artist and craftsperson who kept the PennsylvaniaGerman redware tradition alive, was a nationally known figure who madereproduction redware pottery for 45 years.Lester established Breininger Pottery in 1965 in Robesonia,Pennsylvania, and produced pottery, china, earthenware and stoneware withPennsylvania Dutch images and techniques that date to early America. The pottery was sold out of the family home,the Taylor Mansion. For many years,Breininger Pottery held their famous “Annual Porch Show and Sale” eachAugust. Lester stopped signing hispottery in 2011 due to the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and the 42ndand final porch sale in 2011 marked the end of an era. This decorative redware jar is made of clay,the red color coming from the iron in the local clay, and hand decorated withrich glazes. It measures approximately 4½” in height with a 3 ¾” opening. Eachpiece of Breininger pottery has an incised signature on the base either byLester or Breininger Pottery. Thishandsome piece is signed by Lester and the incised mark reads, “LB – 76 – Pa”. Made in 1976, this is one of Lester’s earliercreations and is in good condition with the exception of three small chipsalong the rim and a scratch on the inside.Despite these flaws this jar is a striking display piece that could alsobe used as a sturdy flower vase or planter.Several redware pieces by this famous Pennsylvania potter have been ondisplay in various museums across the country and since his death, signed anddated Lester Breininger pottery has gone up considerably in value.
