History ofMr. Peanut:

The Planter Peanut Company was born on a park bench in Wilkes-Barre, Pa in 1906, when peanut seller Amedeo Obici and Mario Peruzzi formed their company. Several years later the company opened their first plant in Suffolk, VA (1916).

Planters PeanutCo. was founded in 1906, but it was 10years later when a schoolboyAntonio Gentile, submitted drawings of an anthropomorphic peanut in response toa call for a new brand icon. A brand ad agency later added Mr. Peanut’s tophat, cane, monocle, white gloves and spats to add sophistication to the look.

By the mid-1930s,Mr. Peanut came to represent the whole peanut industry—a rare brandingaccomplishment. In fact, in 2006, Planters organized an online contest to testthe waters on changing the image—perhaps adding a pocket-watch, bowtie orcufflinks—but the response was a resounding no.

The beloved peanutremained mute until November 2010 when Planters hired Robert Downey Jr. to givehim a voice.

At the top of Mr.Peanuts food chain is The Kraft Heinz Co.,the third-largest food and beverage company in North America and thefifth-largest food and beverage company worldwide with eight $1 billion+brands.

Mr. Peanut’sbranding may well be here for another 100 years as this one found his perfectshell.
