History

During World War 2, the Pennsylvania Railroadneeded heavier locomotives to pull huge increases in the length and number of freight trains, many with military supplies and equipment,

Wartime restrictions prohibited the development of new locomotives, so the Pennsylvania Railroad borrowed a Norfolk and WesternClass A 2-6-6-4and a Chesapeake & Ohio class T-1 2-10-4.

After the locomotives were extensively tested, the C&O 2-10-4 was chosen to be produced with a few minor changes to adapt them to PRR mechanical practices. The J class also retained the C&O\'s radial-stay fireboxdesign, instead of the PRR\'s Belpaire firebox design usedon most of the Pennsylvania Railroad\'s steam engines. Like many Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotives, the J1\'s headlight was mounted above the smokebox.

The J1 also hada keystonenumber plate, like PRR passenger steam engines. instead ofthe round numberplates commonly used on the PRR\'s earlier freight steam engines. They were equipped with Baker valve gear, rather than the Pennsy\'s more typical Walschaerts valve gear.

A total of 125 were built at PRR\'sJuniata Shops in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The J1\'s remained in service until the late 1950s. When the PRR transitioned from steam to diesel power, theJ classwas scrappedbetween 1958 to 1959. Tragically, none of these engines were preserved.
