Saddle #168

FULLY TOOLED AND STERLING ADORNED

RARE AND VERY COLLECTABLE

FROM "THE GOLDEN ERA" OF CLASSIC CALIFORNIA SADDLE MAKERS

For this saddle to be marked Nolte Olsen It was in the early stages of their partnership when Al Nolte was personally making all the saddles. Later When he was overwhelmed with work from the success of the the saddle making business the name

was changed to Olsen Nolte and they brought in help to make saddles. Enter Walt Goldsmith who after Al Noltes death took over as head saddle maker for Olsen Nolte.

Very few remain of the Nolte Olsen maker saddles

Of those even fewer remain in this condition

This is a wonderful example of the work and art that Al Nolte did, and why he gained the reputation of being one of the best saddle makers of the GOLDEN ERA.

Understanding the relationship between sterling and leather he enlisted the work of R. SCHAEZLEN to do all of the Sterling work for his saddles, Bridles, Buckles.

R. SCHAEZLEN with a rich history of Colaberation with the master saddle makers of the day, {Visalia stock Saddle, Hamley, Olsen Nolte, Don Bentley, Walt Goldsmith} and many more.

Has left a Everlasting mark on the the feel and the story of these historic saddles and there makers.

Each Saddle is a One Off piece of art that is highly functionable for the work that it was designed for.

This Saddle shows great tooling work & The Sterling conchos are unique as well as the sterling etching on the complete cantle.

The 3" Sterling horn cap has the iconic 14k Gold Schaezlen horse head

The Monels stirrups are original as well as the sterling capped bolts.

THE saddle strings and sheep skin have been replaced as normal maintenance

the stirrup adjusters have been upgraded to Belvins.

It is one thing to look at an appreciate the workmanship of a Al Nolte Saddle, But the true appreciation comes when you spend time in one on the back of a fine horse.

This is where the true reputation of Al Nolte was born. They ride like few other saddles made.

San Francisco, CA 1937 - 1950s

The Olsen Nolte Saddlery was started later in life for Al Nolte, whom at the time of the shop opening in 1937, was in his early 60s having been born in the mid 1870s. On the other hand, John E. Collins was a bit younger of an individual with extensive business background but he had no saddle making experience. Through the experience Al Nolte gained in making fine saddlery over the years working for notable Saddleries like Main & Winchester, Visalia Stock Saddle Company, D. E. Walker, Hermann H. Heiser Saddlery, and the Great West Saddlery to name a few. Together they built a thriving Saddlery Business known as The Olsen Nolte Saddlery of San Francisco and within just a few short years by 1942 Al Nolte passed away, the Saddlery thrived as a premiere saddlery on the west coast until the mid 1950s.
