Wow.... an incredible piece of artwork !THE SPIRIT OF THE CANOE AND PADDLERSIt has been carved and painted with great detail by First Nations artist Peter Wayne Gong. The wood Peter used is maple... exceptional wood grain showing . The outside of the canoe is fully knife finished. The height of this piece is 14 1/2\" and the base is 9 1/4\" in diameter. Wonderful sound when you shake the rattle.Always.... Peter has great determination to make each piece he carves exquisite in every way.The artists\' interpretation of this stunning piece is as follows:As you can see the rattle is an empty canoe. On the base the paddles are painted that are missing from the canoe and there is a spirit man or Shaman reaching out and calling the salmon back to the river as it is their food source as well as calling the paddlers. The canoe has the head of a wolf painted on it. Amazing legend behind this exceptional piece of artwork. Striking piece.
PETER WAYNE GONG\" I am a member of the Squamish Nation . I grew up on the Whonnock reserve #1... it was there that I started carving with my Uncle who taught me to carve wood and ivory. I now work full time out of my studio at my home in Mission B.C. \"
