His bio is below.Canada/US - early 1900\'s.Northwest Coast Haida Native Tsimshian First Nations Carved Wood Slave Figure.Of carved wood and painted brown. Carved as a male, possibly a slave orvanquished warrior figure, in a couching form with knees bent and hands claspedbehind his back, the head pulled back with an animal figure emanating from thetied wrists and pulling at the figure\'s topknot. Standing on a wood ring.Cracked, chipping and loss of pigment in areas (see photos). The shape andtwisted form of this figure corresponds to the form of some massive house posts/ piers found in west coast house interiors, here carved in a diminutive formpossibly for trade purposes in the early 20th century around the same time asthe popularization of miniature totem poles in argyllite. The very round eyesin deep wells, nose and wide mouth strongly suggest Haida sculpture, and likelyQueen Charlotte Islands (Haida Gwaii) as the origin of this piece. It measuresapprox. 17 3/4\" tall x 5 1/2\" x 6 1/4\".
