Very colorful green and deep yellow colors withthe German Gnome, Vernor\'s advertising icon for many years. Made of heavy steel, with tough lead enamel paint to withstand wear and kicking at the bottom of store, diner, restaurant, drug and soda fountaindoors.
Some novices call this sign \"May or may not be porcelain\". I do not know of a porcelain kickplate produced like this one with the Gnome on it! This is just well painted steel.
This one was found recently hidden out of sunlight and the elements,wrapped in paperinside the wall of an old house being restored. It has probably been there since it was stashed away by a Vernor\'s delivery driver who did not give it away free to a store on his route back in the early 50\'s! NOS = New (condition), Old Stock.
There is only one teeny faint scratch I can see, not deep at all,at the lower left about 2\" up and in from corner, in the yellow field. It is just over ΒΌ\". NO rust.
There are a couple of those squiggly lines from whentheglossoriginally dried on the very left edge.That is the only spot of them, and only shows when held at an angle.
There are a few light \'abrasion\' lines in the gloss only. They look like scratches,but they are ONLY in the gloss top layer. They may be able to be buffed out, if it were a concern. But these are so light, one doesn\'t even notice them unless held very close, and at an angle to the light. Photos 5,6,7 and 8 capture them at an angle, magnified and zoomed in close. I don\'t mean to scare you off, as they are so minute. My great camera does make them look much worse than they are. They are possibly from the manufacturing process, as they all seem to be uniform and parallel.
This still grades a 9.95 out of 10 by most!
Still Day One gloss! You would have to be very lucky to ever find another one this nice! If youonly collectthe best, this is for you!
It measures 30\" by 10\". Has the 6 original unused mounting holes. Back is very clean, excellent. All the paint is as solid as can be. It isnot dated. However, most of thekickplates like this were made in the early to mid 1950\'s. This one is coded with Form No. J 4070.
The apostrophe in the Vernor\'s name on signs and in advertisingwas removed after 1959. So definitely this was made before 1959, probably 1954-1955.
Vernor\'s is the oldest continuous soda, first made in 1866 after the first batch was aged 4 years in an oak cask while James Vernor was away from Detroit, serving in the Civil War.
