Old CONTINENTAL Nelson COUNTY Sour Mash WHISKEY Stoneware SCRATCH Jug - B BROS !
Would have been a wholesale liquor dealer, saloon or distillery givaway samplefor the best customers maybe at Christmas or New Year.
Its a very neat mini jug with all the lettering scratched into the surface prior to firing the clay.
The scripted letteringacross the front readsOld Continental Nelson County Sour Mash B Bros.
I believe that the B Bros were actually the Bernheim Bros. of Louisville, Kyand were in businessfrom 1889-1919. This redware clay scratch jug would be one of the earlier pieces.
Height is about 2-1/4 inches, nice ovoid shape somewhat crude, about 1-1/4 inch across base, 1-3/4 inches across the shoulder.
Very nice overall for condition, I see no real signs of damage, one tiny pin prick on the edge of the handle which is very insignificant -thats it, very clean overall, scripted lettering is strong and nicely formed, would be hard to improve upon.
Color is a dark brown albany slip glaze finish.
