Fine Chinese 18th C. Gourd Made Snuff Bottle.
Gourd bottle, usually called calabash, is a kind of unique artwork of China, which is made based on horticulture, techniques, and the join effort of human and the nature. It was recorded in Wuzazu written by Xie Zhaozhe 400 years ago in Ming dynasty that \'it is very common to see rectangular gourd bottle or the gourd bottle with a poem on it sold in the market. There is no doubt that it must be made with mold\', which indicated that gourd bottle had been sold in the market as common merchandise with quite mature technique.
When calabash is soft and tender in growing period, it was stuffed in premade mould and would form specific shaping upon mature. The internal mold was either plain or carved with pattern, so did the calabash. As it said, after gourd bottle techique was introduced into imperial palace, Emperor Kangxi and Qianlong were very fond of calabash, so they didn\'t only enjoy by themselves but also awarded or presented calabash to ministers or foreign envoy.
This snuff bottle was designed with slim neck and flattened oval belly. On both surfaces, it was designed with a bird standing on pomegranate fruit. Pomegranate has many seeds, which means to have many offsprings. This is regarded as an auspicious and prosperous thing for Chinese people. Regarding the brim of the mouth Ibelieve itis needless to say. Everybody will recognizethe material at once if you see it clearly. There\'s a mark on the bottom indicating the creation period of the bottle. It is a joint work of human and nature.
