This is the standard bayonet for the Pattern 1856 Enfield Short Rifle. With the increasing demand for British guns by both sides at the outbreak of the war, many British gun manufactures contracted firms in Belgium and Germany to manufacture bayonets. This particular bayonet is marked on the ricasso with a symbol, most of the first part is in readable a line over an \"M\" and a crown over a \"S\" over a 14 which Solingen. On the top of the blade is a crown over \"S\" and \"4\" which is the inspector\'s stamp. Also engraved on the pommel is the number 727 which is a Confederate shipping inventory number. It also has the number \"22\" which was used to match the bayonet to a specific gun. The condition is very good.
