CIVIL WAR MODEL 1860 CAVALRY SABER - AMES CHICOPEE, MASS. - DATED 1863 - INSPECTOR MARKS DR (DAVID RICE)WITH SCABBARD as defined below

During the American Civil War the Ames Sword Company was awarded contracts for various types of swords totaling over 158,794 in total. This included N.C.O., Musician, Cavalry, Horse Artillery, Foot Artillery, Naval Cutlass and Officers Swords.Of this, during the year of 1863, (23,500) Model 1860 Cavalry Swords of which this is 1 of those manufactured during this time period is offered for sale.

This Model 1860 Ames Cavarly Sword is complete, with scabbard, leather washer, leather grips, wire around grips. The Cavalry sword is as found not cleaned or polished as photos shows.

Blade length approximately 35 inches, no pitting on blade, a few very minor nicks as would be expected. It has a mottled or darken look but shines when exposed to light as photos show. The scabbard a three small dents, on opposing side as well. Many of the actually used Civil War Sabers that I have seen have had this type of dent of which some were caused intentionally to reduce Saber Rattle while on horseback, some were caused by getting slammed between a door on either exiting or entering , others caused by the soldier on horseback upon removing the saber entering battle and kicking the scabbard.

The markings on the blade are US DR 1863 and on the opposite side AMES MFG CO CHICOPEE MASS. The hilt end has the Inspectors mark of DR and the Scabbard Drag has the Inspectors mark of DR.

David Rice was Inspector for Ames from 1835-1863. Both Cavalry Saber and David Rice’s Inspector marks. The information on Ames came from the books, American Swords and Sword Makers, Richard H. Bezdek and The Ames Sword Co, by John D. Hamilton. Photos have been taken in different lighting arrangements to highlight the Ames Cavalry will accept PAYPAL.
