Rare CharlesI SILVER SWEETMEAT DISH, London 1631

DESCRIPTION: Circular with 2 shell handles

HALLMARKS: London 1631 by William Maddox

MEASUREMENTS: 19.5cm (7.75”) wide(incl. handles); 13.7cm (5.3”) diameter; 89 grams

Top of FWe are pleased to be offering this superb example of a rare CharlesI period silver two-handled sweetmeat dish.

The dish has a scallopedcircular form with two shell handles. The sides are chased with ribs andscrolls, plus there are ornate beads and pelletsaround a centralshield-shape cartouche. The cartouche is engraved to the reverse with abetrothal triangle \"S\" over \"I.A\" (where \"I\" isthe old English form of \"J\") - the initials suggest a wedding gift atsome point with the surname of the happy couple beginning with a \"S\".

This type of dish rarelysurvive in good condition and the majority thatappear on themarkethave splits or repairs, however the condition of this sweetmeatdish is superb with justsome scratching to the front cartouche as theonly minorissue to report. The hallmarks are particularly pleasing andclear, with the maker\'s mark \"W\" over \"M\" for WilliamMaddox (master of Thomas Maundy) who was a specialist maker of this type ofvessel and other similardishes (see Jackson\'s Pickford edition page 115top entry). The dish has similarities to wine tasters of the period, but this piece is probably too shallow for that particular function.

Pre English Civil War period silver is very rare as most was melted down in the 1640\'s and 1650\'sto fund either the Royalist or Parliamentarian cause!
