The RLB-E externalreference (four ports) is a high performancereturn lossbridge. The reference impedance may be 50 ohms and it also allows for testing devices which may have other impedances, such as 75 ohm coax or 300 ohm transmission lines. The RLB-E was carefully designed specifically for Ham radioapplications. It uses a wideband 1:1 miniature SMD 750MHz transformer and micro strip line construction. The bridge reference resistors are precision SMD devices.

The RLB-E is used to check the return loss of antennas, coaxial cables, and filters, etc.It operates by comparing unknown impedance to known impedance. The INPUT port is connected to a test frequency source such as an RFoscillator or tracking generator from a spectrumanalyzer. The DET (detector) is connected to an oscilloscope or spectrum analyzer for analysis.

The DUT (device under test) is connected to the item to be tested (antenna, network, coax, or any other deviceunder test. The external reference impedance is compared to the DUT impedance. If theimpedances are exactly equal, than the detector output will be essential zero (0). Most bridges have a residualreturnloss from 30-40 dB (1000-1 to about 10,000). This high sensitivity allows for measuring equivalent SWR of 1:101 or better.
