Sally maintained a studio in a Bay of Fundy village in Nova Scotia, and now has her workshop in NewEngland.Sally creates stylized folk scenes of a "Young America", of the 18th & 19th Century. She is well known for her Sailing Ships and Lighthouses (many with American Flags), Wedding, and rural pastoral scenes with New England style covered bridges.

Her fun themes are painted on individual barrel staves, which can be used todecorate walls, doors, entryways, and mantels. Sally will also restore and paint antiqueand other objects she finds interesting.

Sally paints in the tradition of her mother, E. Dean.

ABOUT STAVESWooden barrels were the plastic storage containers of early America. Five or six hoops of wood or steel, bound the barrelsinto a circle, with two tightly fitting wooden 'end caps' to complete the barrels. Her stavedesigns usually includes separate designs inan end-cap area.Distillers (liquor, beer, and wine)like to use "White oak" woodbecause ofits tight grain and high quality. These barrels are fired (burnt) inside, to provide the traditional liquor flavoring, then the barrel is discarded. Sally acquires barrels from many sources, a large inventory of barrels were purchased from a New Hampshire apple winery, while others came from sale houses, and even supermarkets. STAVE PREPARATIONSally removes thehoops and recycles the larger individual stave's into her folk art. The barrels are carefully disassembled and the individual stave is washed. The burnt side of the stave is sealed with a coat of lacquer or black paint. The outside of the stave is inspected, sanded, bung-holes, cracks or scratches filled, and then re-sanded. The stave is given aprimer coat ofpaint, andthen hand-sanded to a fine finish.DESIGN The design start with a free hand painted background of land, water, and sky and clouds. A scene of the sea, sailing ships, family, or farm, is imagined, outlined, painted and a clear lacquer preservative applied. If appropriate, a wire formounting is added.SPECIAL ITEMSpecial items are also fun and challenging for Sally to decorate. These may include wooden home ironing boards, old fashion breadand lap boards, metal watering cans, maple syrup sap collection buckets, table & chair sets, skis, cross cut saws and fancydance shoes.

A NOTE FROM SALLY “It is a pleasure to create my interpretation of life in a Young America, in unique, fun, colorful, and patriotic presentations." S. Nolan
