Purdy Jewelers Alcohol Lamp, or Torch – This Alcohol lamp, withits spherical dark-blue glass fuel container and stand, was patented by John H.Purdy of Chicago, Illinois. The sphere is marked “PATD SEP. 14 TH 1880 ANDMARCH 14 TH 1893”. These two dates refer to US Patent Numbers 232,206 and493,341, respectively. The glass sphere rests loosely in the cup-shaped holderand could be positioned vertically or at any angle to the horizontalorientation.

These lamps were often used in association with a blow pipe, theoperator gently blowing the flame in the desired direction. The lamp wasmarketed mostly to the watchmakers and jewelers trade, although they werepopular with anyone requiring a desktop source of pin-point heat for finesoldering. These lamps were marketed in a variety of glass colors and by anumber of laboratory supply outlets and “tool” distributors.

The glass reservoir is 3 1/2 inches in diameter with the glass andwick holder being 6 inches in height. With the glass sphere resting in itsstand, the total height is about 7 inches. The glass has a number of tiny airbubbles and other included imperfections which is compatible with its age. Thestand, I believe, is made of thin nickel-plated brass.

This lamp and its base are in excellent condition. There are nochips or cracks in the glass, and the entire lamp, its base, wick cap, andchain, are flawless. The Purdy Lamp is illustrated and discussed on page 208 inthe book More VintageBlowtorches.
