Rare 100 Year Old American Cuckoo Co. Antique Cuckoo Clock:

This sale is for a very rare 100 year oldcuckoo clock made by The American Cuckoo Company of Philadelphia, PA. TheAmerican Cuckoo Clock Co. began in 1885 as large importers of cuckoo clocks fromthe Black Forest in Germany. However, so many of the imported clocks arrived indamaged condition that the firm decided to manufacture cuckoo clocks inAmerica. They set up a manufacturing plant where they employed skilled Europeanwood carvers to embellish the ornamental framework. The movements, bellows, andcertain other small components were imported from Germany and installed in theAmerican made clock cases. The American Cuckoo Clock Co. went out of businessduring the Second World War due to the supply of movements from Germany beingcut off and material allocation for the war.

This clock was made between 1910 and 1920 and isin very good condition for being around a hundred years old. The clock’s mainfeature is the large American Eagle which sits at the top of the crown. Theclock also features detailed carvings of branches and leafs. The cuckoo birdthat pops out of the door when the clock chimes was hand carved of wood and hasmoving flapping wings. The large dial on the clock measures 5 inches across. Thisclock does have a few minor flaws that I will point out. There is an old repairmade to the crown, left side below the eagle which can be seen in the picturesif you look closely. The hands and chains are not original and look like theywere replaced some time ago.

The one day movement has been professionallycleaned and oiled and the clock runs perfectly keeping accurate time. Thebellow pipes had new tops installed (about 30 years ago) and have a nice deepsound. At the top of each hour the cuckoo bird pops out of his door bobbing upand down and flapping his wings as the clock cuckoos and gongs the time. On thehalf hour the cuckoo bird reappears and the clock cuckoos and gongs once. Theclock measures 18 inches high, 14 inches wide, and 8 inches deep. Package willinclude clock, crown, back door, pendulum, 2 weights, and set up instructions.
