Rare Antique Edward Barnes Sheffield / American Bowie Knife Excellent Cond. L@@K:
$2495.00

An important antique English Sheffield / American Bowie knife circa 1855. It appears to bein excellent conditionand has not been abused or cleaned as far as I know. It was purchased from an Ohio estate where it had been past down in the family until I aquired it. Provenance goes back to the mid 1850\'s, prior to the Civil War.

Thanks to a very helpful er the knife has been identified as having been made by Edward Barnesand bears his prominent U. S. and 5 pointed star makers mark at the base of the 7 inch bowie clip blade. The leather sheath is original and in remarkable condition with the belt loop still attached, although it has come loose on one side. Overall length is 12 1/2 inches.

The blade is quite heavy and there is no doubt it had one primary purpose. I am guessing itwas gentlysharpened maybe once or twice back in the day, nevertheless you can still see the vast majority of the original polish on the blade. There are no nicks that I can see or feel. To top it off, the handle is German silver of the best quality and features exquisite scroll work. This \'Tulip\' style German silver handle; as some ers have called it; is also seen on other Barnes Bowies\' of the period.

Some people / collectors dispute that a Barnes\' Sheffield Bowieis not American, but I disagree. America was an English colony for well over 150 years pror to the 1776 Revolution, and was largely populated and explored by the English from 1621 on ( Jamestown excluded ). Even after the Revolution itwas still looked at as an English colony lostby the British Crown well into the late 19th. century.

Barnes produced his Bowies\' for the American market, and clearly drew from American design and history in his symbolism to enhance sales. A few analogies / comparisons will support this.

Firstly, true antique American pewter DOES NOT EXIST, yet all sources attribute English pewter reworked in the Colonies as American. Strange, yet the vast majority of American pewterers prior to the Civil War were of English birth; or first / second / third generation decendants of former English subjects. The fact is that the English Crown heavilytaxed raw metals ( tin, lead, brass, silver, gold, etc. ) so highly prior to the Revolutionthat Americans could not afford to buy them, henceAmerican merchantsIMPORTED and soldthe vast majority of finished pewter goods at a lower price than the American colonists could make them forlocally. The English Crown did this deliberately to keep the colonists under their grasp and to ensure a strongly positive Englishtrade balance. However, pewter generally wore out in about 6 months becauseit was soft and the \'poor mans\' silver. Local English pewterers who had come from England to work / live in America recycled worn pewter to make new flatware and holloware on an approximate50% cost / labor basis. Not surprisingly, most early\'American\' pewterers copied the style ofEnglish marks to make their wares more saleable / desireable. So; when was a distiction made that British subjects living / working in the Colonies were American? What about pewterers who worked and sold pewter in both England and America? And what about tin, the primary metal in Pewter? There were no tin mines in America, it was all exported by the British.

The second example is American silver. In general, prior to the Civil War, American silversmiths werelargely of English birth or descent. English silver was .925 parts pure, or \'Sterling\', but American silver was generally .900 fine, or \'coin\' silver, alluding to the melting and recycling of silver coins in America to make holloware. A line could be strictlydrawn on the purity of the silver used, but is this appropriate? Even Paul Revere, arguably America\'s most famous silversmith was was of French / English desent. He was born inBoston in 1734 to a French father andwas technically a French citizen. However, living in the colonies under British rule more or less made him an English subject. Following the British \'Stamp Act\' of 1765 he participated in protests against British rule and supported Independance, but did this make him \'American\'? Not at all. In a melting pot of cultures and religions, where do you draw the exact connection? Is it where you were born, work,or later move to?

The third example is probably the most applicable whenthinking aboutAmerican Bowie style knives. It is the \'American\' flintlock or long rifle. The \'Golden Age\' of \'American flintlock rifles\' should then be more appropriatelyrenamed the \'French GermanColonial\' period; or arguably the \'German French American\' period in deferenceto the men who made them. Yet collectors of American flintlocks agressively seek these rare and early \'American\' long rifles. They don\'t label them as French, German or European influence, origin, or design. In my collection passed down through the family is a rare earlyflintlock by the \'American\' maker L. H. Le Claire with a 41\" octagon barrel. I know of only one other in existence.

So back on point, if Edward Barnes made American style Bowie knives in Sheffield England for sale to Americans before, during, and after the American Civil War; shouldn\'t they share the same distinction as being decidedly American? If you disagree; would it make a difference if Barnes moved to America in 1850 and set up a factory here while still also continuing to run his factory in Sheffield? Did \'American\' makers use imported Sheffield steel?

Hmmm. Food for thought?

We believe in 5-star service! So please, onlyleave positive comments and5 stars for all DSR scores. The system actually considers \'4\'s and other scores asunacceptable andpunishes those sellerswith higher fees, severely impacting their ability to list merchandise. Once a seller falls below the performance threshold they are blocked from selling, and the bargains and greatfinds that buyers have come tolook forand expect disappear. If you intend to leave a neutral, a negative, or anything other than a 5 give us a chance to resolve your concerns first. Our phonenumber and email address are in every listing. Also, please remember thatshipping charges for Parcel Post, Priority Mail, etc. are constantly on the rise and shipping delays due to Post Office cutbacks are common. While these costsmay seem expensive to you and any delays unreasonable; I don\'t control them; so don\'t leave a low score just because of this.

California residents add 9.75% sales tax.

I amvery rural and ourPost Office is only open a few hours each day. They are closed for lunch;occasionally when the clerks are doing deliveries; and at 4PM weekdays. Plus closedSaturdays, Sundays and all Holidays.Needless to say the USPS cutbacks have hit us harder than just about anywhere else. Sometimes it can be a challenge just to get something mailed!

The Post Office significantly raised package shipping fees 2 years ago and have another increaseplanned forJanuary 2014.Currently, packages weighing over 13 ounces and up to approximately 5 pounds are the most expensive to ship on a per pound basis. Parcel Posttothe East Coast in some casesruns $107.16 not including insurance or delivery confirmation. These are the packages mostpeople ship, so the PO makes atidy windfallon these lighter class shipments.Furthermore, rates are not charged by weightand distance alone. A three tier multiplier is used to calculate the volume of all packages over 12\"x12\"x12\". The first tier; up to 83\" length and girth combined; is a small per pound surcharge based primarily on the actual weight for medium-sized packages. Once a large packagemeasures between 84\" - 107\"though, you pay for a \'balloon rate\' 20 pound parcel, or for the actual weight, whichever is more. If you exceed this dimensional allowance and ship a very large package between 108\" - 130\", you pay for 70 pounds regardless of the actual weight. For example, shipping a brick to New York will cost you$9.92, but a very large 24\"x 24\"x 24\" box weighing3 pounds with a pillow, will cost $107.16.

Iship via USPS Parcel Post or Priority Mail; whichever is less; within 1business day 90% of the time, but sometimes delays are unavoidable. I will keep costs as low as I can, anduse the best care reasonably possible to ensure safe delivery of your merchandise. Per rules,U.S. purchases areshippedwith a delivery confirmation tracking number for your protection.Surprisingly, Postal insuranceno longeroffers online tracking, soI only purchase it for delicate and high value articles. If youprefer expedited shipping or special services, just let me know before you pay and I will send you a revised invoice.

Normal delivery times for Parcel Postare usually7-14 business days to the East Coast, but sometimes longer depending on the availability of USPS contracted trucking services and weather conditions.

FedExor Greyhound Busshipping of large or heavy items will be automatically declaredat full value and sent insuredwhenever possible, but due to their distance from my home (70+ miles round trip), it may take an extra week before I can get to town and ship your item(s).

Since now requiresthat sellerslist a shippingamount in advance; I generally use flat rate shipping quotes to the Midwest. This is the fairest cost approach for everyone. East Coast zones 7 and8 rates are higher and Iwill pay anydifference. All items are custom packaged after the sale when I have a destination address. Please understand that there are simplytoo many variables involved in packing collectibles for safe transit to be 100% accurate. Insome cases your total shipping cost will be less depending on the carrier used and Ican issue a PayPal credit.I utilize many different shippers to save you money and can usually accommodate special requests.

I am a \'Green Shipper \' andtry to use recycled boxes when available, andalso buy the new, more expensive Environmentally friendly Styrofoampeanuts and bubblewrap.

International buyers are welcome to offer and I will ship most merchandise anywhere in the world. Please understand though;thatafter 9-11Foreign shipping became very expensive and that the Post Office now offers only Priority and Express airmail. Allinexpensive serviceswere cancelled via sea mail (ship ), including Parcel Post surface, M-bags, Book Rates, Library Mail, Periodicals, and Media Mail. Parcel Post airmail was also cancelled, so the only option left for very large packages is Express Mail

Foreign buyers should therefore request a shipping quote before placing a offer.

Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These costs are the buyers responsibility. Please check with your countries Customs Office to determine what these additionalfees will be prior to offerding / buying. These charges are normally collected by the delivering freight / shipping company, or when you pick the item up. Do not confuse them for additional shipping charges. We do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as gifts. US and International government regulations prohibit such behavior. Customs delays are normal and packages can take weeks longer to arrive than estimated by the Post Office or by the system. This delay will depend entirely on your Countries backlog and inspection procedures, so please be patient. If you are not happy with the merchandise, contact me immediately by email or phone to see how we can resolve the deal to our mutual satisfaction before leaving neutral or negative response. I will be as fairas I can, and generally offer a 7-14 day return policy less shipping and 15% for costs. You are responsible for return shipping charges. Large lots and collections are sold as is and are not returnable for any reason. I will do my best to accurately describe lots for sale, but on occasion I make mistakes or simply can\'t explain every detail you might want to know. If you have any questions, ask them before placing a offer and I will reply promptly. All positive response is greatly appreciated and I always reciprocate, but ask that buyers post it for me first since this is the only way I know that your satisfied.PLEASE DON\'T offer IF YOU WILL NOT COMPLETE THE TRANSACTION. CHANGES IN AND PAYPAL POLICY HAVE DRAMATICALLY INCREASED THE FEES TO SELLERS AND CHANGED THE ALLOWABLE TIME AND CIRCUMSTANCES UNDER WHICH COMMISSION REFUNDS ARE PERMITTED. IT IS ALSO UNFAIR TO OTHER buyers WHO REALLY WANTED THE MERCHANDISE. PROMPT PAYMENT INSURES THAT BOTH PARTIES WILL BE HAPPY WHILE MAINTAINING THE GOOD WILL AND INTEGRITY MOST PEOPLE HAVE COME TO EXPECT FROM .
