Staffordshire England c. 1830

This early English miniature toy tea set was madefor childs play or a dolls tea party. The little tea set includes a teapot, sugar and creamer trio, each piece quite arebut even rarer to find the three pieces altogether.

The teapot stands on 4 little bun feet just measures5 1/2” long and 3 3/4\" tall to the top of the flower finial with a dolphinhandle. The sucrier or sugar box stands 3 1/2\" high and measures 41/2\" across. The cream pitcher or milk jug stands 2 1/2\" tall andmeasures 3 1/2\" across. The set was finely potted, transfer printed inblack on creamy earthenware, finished with pearlwareglaze and a hand painted outline along the rims and handle. Decorated withtraditional \'genre\' scenes of country life and country courtship, with scenesof a shepherd boy with his sheep, neighbors talking over the garden gate, ahorseman with his dog, a boy and girl discovering a nest on the ground in thegarden, and a boy and girl picking flowers. The lid haver tiny snippets of images. Exquisitenaive folk art imagery, a beautiful example of early 19th century miniaturetransferware.

Typically, the set is unmarked. Based on the unmistakable form and floralfinial, the maker is attributed to be Hackwood in the Staffordshire region of England. One of the earliest wares intended for children to play with, used to instructthem in proper table manners or for a playtime tea party or simply to decoratea dollhouse table.

The set is in great condition – chipping on the inside rim of the sugar, and no other chips cracks or repairs. Minor glaze crazing, a minor firingseparation and typical smears and smudges consistent with age.
