Very rare civil war officer cavalry saber and scabbard, French made from the Gettysburg area.Beautiful saber, you can still see lot of the original engraving on both side of the blade.Markings on the flat edge of the blade “manuf re de chatellerault”. The blade is about 35”long.Custom made solid wood stand.On the scabbard there are areas that look like old dry blood. Probably horse blood.Note that during the civil war the officer’s swords were not government controlled so the enterprising agent occasionally bought and used blades other than from the US. A very rare saber.This item was purchased at an estate sale in Gettysburg and as per family members; this item was in their family for generations.Local pick up only in Hanover, PA 17331.
