RARE HAWTHORNE PRE WAR? ANTIQUE BICYCLE BIKE RATROD MARKED SE UNIQUE TANK FRAME:
$65.00

Greetings! For your consideration:A RARE? HAWTHORNE PRE-WAR? ANTIQUE BICYCLE BIKE RATROD MARKED SE with a UNIQUE TANK & FRAMEA very interesting Hawthorne from Montgomery Ward here. I can not find another example with this exact same frame and only 2 that are somewhat similar; most seem to have two cross bars as opposed to the single shell frame style of this one. Also the \"gas tank\" is very peculiar; it is much smaller than ones I have seen and did not come with a cross bar underneath it which also seems to be typical. The base of the bike where the chain meets the rear wheel is marked \"SE\" on both sides. I am not sure the significance of that but it seems to be the only marking I can see. The tires are completely shredded and barely present however the tubes are and the front tube even seems to still hold air. The tube on the front is Marked \"Wards Riverside\" and says 26\" x 1.75\". This bike is in need of some TLC; unearthed from a pile of leaves, vines and shrubs was this beauty. I am confused as to the year and parts of it seem to look 30s and 40s but also seems to look a bit early 1950s. I feel like it is from the 30s or 40s however have no way of verifying this. She is very heavy and seems to have a black frame with a white stripe; the chain guard looks like it was white with green lettering. \"Hawthorne\" can still be read clearly. The back basket holder and tank also look like like they were white and green. There looks like there was once a light attached to the center of the handle bars; which is consistent with some of the early Hawthorne models. The light or whatever was there has long been broken off. I believe the remains are the base of the light for there is a hole in the bottom where I believe the wiring would go through however am unsure. The frame and fenders seem to be in solid condition with some dings and rust; however there is heavy rust to the rims; seat; chain; gear and handle bars. I have not sprayed this with WD-40 or anything yet and am leaving it \"as is\". I believe the rims are salvageable and was able to sit on it with all my weight without any consequence. (165 lbs.). The chain and gear look like they will function fine when oiled and it does spin (haven\'t done a full rotation because of the mangled tires). It comes with a back rear dual basket set up as well as a small front basket (not pictured). I am not sure as to if these came originally with the bike or not. The frame is very heavy and solid and has the Hawthorne/Montgomery Ward, Chicago Ill. logo proudly displayed on the front. The handle bars have rust but function fine. Really a cool look bike with a unique scheme to it. Again, not sure if it is pre-war but it does look early.
