Very fine miniature Tlingit Rattle Top gift basket, circa 1900, but unfortunately, with a damaged lid.

Native American - Tlingit People. Alaska, circa 1890 - 1910 (or possibly a bit earlier).

The basket is tightly woven, about 18 stitches to the inch, horizontally.

The rattle-top lid is heavily damaged, with significant losses. The ‘rattle-top’ enclosure is in good condition and still rattles. However, there are several breaks around the rim of the lid and there is a missing section of the side of the rim (see photos).

The main body section of the basket is in good condition with only one very small puncture on the bottom (10 o’clock on the photo of the bottom) and no losses. The basket, both the lid and the body have darkened from age.

There is no doubt that a basket restorer could easily fix this basket, but I don’t know what that would cost.

The basket is decorated with traditional Tlingit geometric designs and crosses in black, orange, and yellow (the crosses).
