I have a very clean HK 350i for sale. I acquired this in a package deal from a gentleman’s collection. Usually I would just give this type of receiver away not being a Marantz. Feeling the weight, looking inside and knowing it’s meek 20 watt output I wasn’t expecting much. Turns out I was completely wrong with my assumption. This little bastard wails. Very impressive performance even driving larger speakers. It is amazing how clean and clear this receiver remains even at ear bleeding levels. This is no “warm sounding” receiver which I’m sorry to say is just a tired machine someone is trying to sell. Just beautiful fidelity without the audible pixelated sound of instruments mashing together as with newer machines. The machine was in really good shape when I found it. It maybe even had another 5 years left in it but I decided to go through everything and make sure it would see it’s 50s. I started by taking it apart ,cleaning all switches and reflowing solder. Changed problematic axial lightbulbs which burn the boards to green LEDs . Dial pointer bulb was changed to a yellow LED as well. Tone board recapped with Elma silmic II,nichicon fg ka and Panasonic.Power amp was recapped with the same and replaced main caps changed to 6800uf 50v Elna for audio with the two Panasonic films.Driver transistors upgraded to a heavier duty OnSemi product. All other caps checked and transistors re greased,voltage and HFE tested. Then performed perfect 33mv DC biasing as well as 0mv DC at speaker terminals. Just breaking it in now (5hrs) on some Polk 10s and it tears it up. Very composed with realistic bass reproduction not over extended. First song I played was Metallica One at half volume (which is way to loud) Wow .... the sound of the crisp highs of the symbols and intense bass of the drum solo was an enjoyable experience. Owning several 30w and lower late 60’s,early 70s Marantz products which are powerful and amazing sounding but cannot keep up at these volume levels. It kills me to admit that. Long story short .Lots of work done, sounds great and cheap
