1792 FM 8 Reales

Carolus IIII

Mexico City Mint

In1792 there was only one type of 8 Reales issued by the Mexico City Mint.

Onthe Portrait 8 Reales which started in 1772, the practice at the mint was toidentify, by placing on the reverse side, the senior assayer’s initial firstwhen going around the coin clockwise, using the initial of what we call “thefirst name” in the United States of America. “Senior” refers to the assayerhired first at the mint.

FranciscoArance Cobos was an assayer from 1777 into 1803 and Mariano Rodriguez from 1784into 1801.

In1792 the initials FM refer to these 2 assayers.

MexicoCity 8 Reales from 1791 issued under Carolus IIII through the armored bustseries ending in 1811 issued under Ferdinand VII were 89.6% pure silver.

PRICES: My price reference is 2015 North American Coins &Prices David Harper Editor (24th Edition). The prices listed for this1792 FM 8 Reales are: Very Good (8) = $60.00, Fine (12) = $90.00, Very Fine(20) = $135.00, Extremely Fine (40) = $210.00.Prices for higher quality levels Extremely Fine (45) and AlmostUncirculated (50) are not listed.

ANACSgrades this coin as an AU-50, noting that it has corrosion, and has beencleaned.

Onthe reverse I do not see any corrosion, or any cleaning marks.

Onthe Portrait side, for corrosion start at the number 9 and go around clockwisealmost to the top, going through the legend. Some of it is in the letters, andsome interior to them, most noticeable up to the U.

Forcleaning, they are referring to superficial scratches that are almost parallelto each other. The lines are mostnoticeable in the right field in front of his face. There are some across his face and neck.

Overall, for this coin, subtractions from perfect come from:

1.The metal corrosion mentioned.

2.The scratches created by an old time cleaning.

3.The scratches, nicks, etc. caused by some little bit of circulation, reducingthe grade to an Almost Uncirculated 50 (AU-50).

Thephysical appearance of a coin will differ depending on the type and intensityof the light under which we view the coin.I use a 100 watt incandescent light bulb at a distance of about 1 foot.

INTERNATIONALSALES

If you are not in the US,contact me first.

I want to get this coin toyou as inexpensively as possible. Theimportant part here is “get this coin to you”.

Global Shipping Program: has a whole system set up for the protected international shipment of items, called their Global Shipping Program. Iset myself up to use it, but found that the shipping costs using this programwere extremely high. Because of this, Iopted out of it. If anyone familiar withthis program has found the shipping costs for items such as these 8 Reales tobe low, and believes I made some mistake in my evaluation, I would appreciateyour help in showing me where I made an error.

I want to be able to getthese coins to international buyers safely and cheaply. If you know of any shipping method that makesthis possible, let me know what it is and I will do it your way because you arepaying for it.

No sales to the following areas:

Africa, Asia-CHINA, India, the oldcommunist countries, plus some others. In South America, I will not sellto Chilebecause of a bad experience that cost me several hundred dollars.

Mexico: Shipment of old Mexican coins back to Mexico, where they came from inthe first place, is not permitted by the Mexican Government.

It is the case that sometimes a coin will get past customs, but that isan oversight. If you want me to try toget a coin past customs and have found a way that has worked for you, I willtry it. Realize that if you do not getyour coin, the loss is 100% yours-no refund from me-nothing. I would really hope that major Mexicannumismatic associations would band together and petition their government tohave a legal exception made for collector coins. As I understand it, the law prohibiting theimport of these collector coins is really just accidentally including them, butit is including them nonetheless.

Iwould appreciate your paying me in a timely fashion after the close of thesale.

Other Information

My shipment to you: The 8th largest city in the USA nolonger has a Post Office open after 5:00PM Monday through Friday. My mail routeis “in transition” so I no longer have any idea who is going to be deliveringmy mail, or at what time of day. I amnot going to leave a $50-$500 coin outside to be picked up by “whomever”. Given all of this, if you win and pay for acoin this morning, it probably won’t be put in the mail this afternoon.

Returns:This is a collector coin and not just some chunk of silver bullion. If you do not feel that this coin is “rightfor you” after you have examined it, send it back to me (at your expense). Return it at your convenience, preferablywithin 14 days. The shipping to you is at my expense for domesticshipping.

Please readeverything I have stated to you about this coin, if I have made any specificcomments about it. If you have someconcern about the coin that I did not explain to you in this listing, send anemail to let me know what your concern is, if you want to. This is not some chunk of silverbullion. It is an old collector’s coin, and you and I both know, as coin collectors, that you really have to directlyexamine an old coin like this one to decide if you feel satisfied with what yougot. After you have looked at it, if youdecide that it is “not for you”, you don’t have to list a bunch of reasons whyyou have decided you do not want it.Just let me know that you will be sending it back so that I will know toexpect it. I have other old 8 Reales. If for some reason we can’t get you to feelsatisfied with this coin, that doesn’t mean you won’t be happy with the nextone you win.

I want you to be satisfied with what you get.

I want to build a positive business relationship with you,not just “get a sale”.
