Original Deed - 1796 - Property in Fitchburg, Massachusetts
Jotham Johnson of Leominster to Andrew Goodall of Fitchburg.
Seventy acres for 110 pounds, sounds like a deal ... The deed spells out the boundaries and it wouldn\'t be hard to determine what\'s on that property today. Probably a housing development or a shopping mall.
A simple search on the internet reveals that Jothan Johnson was born in 1753 in Bolton, Mass. He died in 1815 in Leominster. He married Sarah Gardner in 1792 and had three children, Milton, Sarah and Mary. He was receiving a Revolutionary War pension in his later years, so he obviously was a patriot. I couldn\'t find a thing on Andrew Goodall. It\'s all there, though, if you can take the time to look.
This is a great looking document and should be properly framed to preserve it for another 220 years. (float it so that some background shows all around it .. your framer will know). This transaction was made while George Washington was president. If that doesn\'t get you excited then don\'t even think about buying it. It\'s not for you. There\'s not a lot of inexpensive Washington era paper about. In a few years there won\'t be any! So if it turns you on, get yourself a little piece of early Americana to preserve and pass on to your descendants.
The document is in very good condition. The once white paper has faded to an attractive light tan. The handwriting is in dark brown ink. It\'s been folded for the past 200 years or so, and the fold lines have weakened. I\'ve supported them in a few places on the back side with special, almost invisible archival tape, made specifically for that purpose. Does not detract at all.
