ULTRA-RARE VINTAGE N836 NIGHTGOWN/NIGHTIE by HILTON VAN RAALTE Size OS NEW IN BOX - RAYON TRICOT There is a small label, discreet, down in the side seam. On one side, printed in grey, it says HILTON Van Raalte, and on the other we are told the size is OS (for Out-Sized) and that the fabric is rayon . . . nylon stabilised, whatever that means. There’s stuff about methods of bulking textile yarns, if you are interested enough to Google the subject. Don’t be. All you need to know is that the fabric is gloriously luxurious. Quite heavy too, and it’s called Miracle Milanese: deliciously soft, as you would expect when two quality lingerie manufacturers put their heads together in a joint venture that married some of the best Australia and America could muster. Lingerie bearing this label is very, very rare. When it’s brand new and still in its original box, multiply by a hundred. This is the sort of nightgown that you might take out of the safe once a year, supposedly to check that it’s still in perfect condition, but really for the pure delight of handling something as lovely as this. And Sara got to wear it once – with the instruction to look suitably . . . prim (the box lid says the colour is “Prim Pink”. Maybe just a trifle snooty because there can be no doubt that a nightgown such as this was made for, and worn by, a very particular kind of lady. The sort who wouldn’t even notice how people open doors for her. A taste for the finer things in life – not just because, as Van Raalte used to say, “you love nice things” but because you and finery belong together. A lady of a certain age, we can see this by the design: intended to cover up that which would once have been a joy to behold. The lady is compensated by being enveloped in quite the loveliest, softest, silkiest and heaviest of fabrics. The fabric-covered buttons close the neckline, with ecru-coloured appliqué-decorated double chiffon at either side. Almost a peignoir, as a gown of this nature would be, to wear for an evening at home. There would be a little bell on the coffee table, next to her book, so she could call the maid if in need of . . . but how would we know what she might need? Fifty inches and more across the bust, so OS truly does mean properly large. The 58 inches of length give a deceptive impression because, worn by an outsized someone, some of those inches have a way of disappearing. And that’s it. Back in your box, all neatly folded in your original tissue, now that we have satisfied ourselves you are in perfect condition – and that you feel absolutely divine. The next time the lid comes off the box is when you get to lift it, pull away the paper band and part the tissue wrapping. Then you get to read the tag . . . and treasure the moment. Moments plural.
Our vintage clothing and nightwear comes to you specially selected from the most respected American manufacturers. Regrettably, we are no longer allowed to tell you who they are (even though most of them ceased trading long ago), while our lords and masters can tell you all about half a dozen mobile phone companies . . . that they don’t sell. Such is life. Unless stated as New with or without tags (NWT or NWOT), all are sold as being in excellent used condition: free of damage, holes, tears and stains, except where specifically stated otherwise. And while we\'re at it, how about answering the question, in case any of you are wondering why we let our TRS + seller status slip recently. It is most regrettable that we vintage clothing sellers are being near-forced into offering 30 day returns. We don\'t feel it\'s fair for sellers or our buyers. Would you want to buy something on another user has recently possessed for the last month, other than the seller representing the item? We don\'t know if it\'s been exposed to pet allergens, smoke... or even worn for a special occasion. Particularly, in the lingerie market, we just don\'t think enough thought went into the decision to implement that plan. As a result, we\'re now having to pay 20% more on seller fees and are losing our badge. Two weeks is more than enough time for buyers to decide whether they want that item or not. As many people are talking in the forums, we feel it will some day lead to even longer return possibilities. A year? Enough is enough.
