ULTRA-RARE VINTAGE PRINTED YELLOW ROSES PHILMY FULL SLIP by VAN RAALTE Size 34 The babyfine mesh (it looks like chiffon) that trims the top and bottom edges is a Philmy tradition. Not all examples featured it but, when you see its undulating shape, then the next step is to search inside for the label. Both sides of the label. There are, at any one time, something like seven or eight hundred Van Raalte items for sale online, so we can safely assume this is not a rare brand. Nice, certainly, but not rare. Usually two or three Philmies and you can get lucky. Flowery Philmies – ah, now that’s another matter altogether. Never seen one before and, in all probability, nor have you. Can’t call it unique because there must be others – but, to all intents and purposes, we are offering for sale the only flowered Philmy you are ever likely to see. Were it not for (literally) tiny issues, it would be perfect. In the hemline’s babyfine mesh, by the right-hand seam, are two patches of etched fabric that look like holes. With care, they won’t become holes but the larger of the two is almost 2mm diameter. And (a little of) the enamel has come off the edges of those metal sliders, that adjust the 3/8”-wide satin ribbon straps. This prevents us from selling it as Museum Quality (and at a price to match). Yes, it could be even more expensive! What you get for your money is the knowledge that you own something extraordinarily special and, if you are a 34” bust person, you could wear it . . . for special occasions only, of course. The colour (if you can call it a colour) is only just cream. The yellow roses might (repeat: might) not be quite as yellow as they were sixty years ago. This slip has been worn and loved. By someone who loved nice things. Lucky girl – because the nylon fabric is, to say the least, sumptuous. Measurements, because these things are important: from below the arm to the hemline, the length is 37”, the overall width across the bodice is 36” and the midriff section 34”.
