Jonah Kumalae had a grading system for his ukes ABCDE or #12345. \"A\" was the least expensive on this scale and \"E\" was the most expensive. This uke is a #4 or \"D\" the next to the most expensive. The more expensive meant finer curly Koa and had more inlay and hand work.

Jonah Kumalae 1874 to 1940 is best know for his Gold award Ukes. He won a offer to display his ukuleles at the Pan Pacific International Exposition in 1915 where he won the Gold award for his ukuleles.

This vintage Gold Award Jonah Kumalae Ukulele is in near mint conditionand all original including Koa Tunning pegs and original gut strings. The uke is made from fancy Hawaiian Koa wood and would be fairly early because it has hand made wooden tunning pegs and no hole label inside. I HAD A HARD TIME PHOTGRAPHING THE FANCY KOA! ENLARGE PHOTOS TO SEE FINE QUALITY OF WOOD.

Fine Fancy Rope inlay around top of body, sound hole.

Condition,No cracksor repairs. No strum marks. It looks as if it was never played.

Slight damage, tiny piece of rope inlay(1/8\" by 1/8\") missing(see 9th photo)

Small sound hole for nice acoustics

Come with it\'s own fitted case.
