We believe this to be a rare Van Briggle OWL lamp/light bulb base sculpture made by the Van Briggle Pottery Co. of Colorado Springs, CO. It may be a vintage piece. I believe the purpose of this pottery owl was to have a light bulb or candle inserted or installed in the bottom fixture area so the eyes would glow when lit as a lamp (I have seen some with marble eyes that glow when lit and I am not sure if the person had to add the marbles to the eye sockets). This sale is simply for the Van Briggle pottery owl figure/sculpture base as there is no hardware that comes with this to make it into a lamp. You as the buyer could do this yourself if so desired. The owl has a beautiful matte colored glaze composed of a burgundy dark red color and a dark green almost blue color. The owl stands a little over 9\" tall x about 6 and 1/2\" widest from base to back of circular holder edge. For its age the condition is nice with some minor issues to point out: first there is what appears to be a hairline or crack on the circular candle/lamp holder circle (see pics) and I am not certain to whether this at one time sheered off and was repaired; however, I can tell you if it was the fix was done well and the hairline/crack is tight. I did not even notice this until right before listing. Also, there are some left over lime or hard water deposits on the very bottom of this piece - I did soak it for a few days in white vinegar and it cleaned up very well. The new owner could soak it longer and perhaps the rest of the deposits will come off - relatively little left. You may actually smell some white vinegar still on it as I am trying to get the smell off with soap/water. Other than this it is very fine - no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. It is signed but hard to see inside the candle/light holder area just above on the side wall (AA) for the Artus and Ann VanBriggle marking (see pic). There are no other marks on this piece. If you collect owls or Van Briggle, don\'t miss out on this wonderful pottery piece.
