Very Nice McIntosh MAC-4100 AM/FM/Stereo Receiver Tuner Preamp Amplifier:
$799.00

Up for sale is a very nice McIntosh MAC-4100 all solid state AM/FM/Stereo receiver. The unit has great cosmetics and has been cleaned and serviced for excellent performance. Unit isS/N BY5757.

The 4100 is a pretty fancy unit combining a flexible preamp, a 75/75 watt amplifier (similar to the MC-752) and a great AM/FM Stereo tuner (similar to the MR-75). The receiver is furnished in a good sized chassis that features a grid-like pattern of knobs and switches that is a bit different than earlier 1700 and 1900 receivers. Don\'t be fooled -- the 4100 is the real deal when it comes to flexible operation! There are two scope output jacks for visual monitoring (via MPI units or dedicated oscilloscope) of FM performance, there is a quite handy record changer operated power switching circuit that permits shutting down the receiver after the last record plays. Connections are provided for three sets of speakers, the volume control is really a stepped attenuator calibrated in 2db steps and the \'on-off\' switch is a separate, higher current pushbutton control.

There are two tape loops, stereo power output bar LED\'s and a multi-band equalizer. If you are unfamiliar with the 4100 features, please have a look at any of the informative McIntosh based websites for a guided tour around the 4100.

This particular unit belonged to my friend Greg Meise, one of Kansas City\'s well known and long tenured jazz musicians. Greg has always enjoyed quality stereo equipment and is only selling the 4100 because he has purchased an MX-130. The unit is in great condition and looks good, but it does have one VERY unusual characteristic. Please have a look at the photo depicting the tuning glass. There are two small, short \"wiggles\" in the horizontal dial line between the 90 and the 100 on the AM scale. As part of cleaning in preparation for the sale, I disassembled the front panel and examined the dial glass closely. As far as I can tell, the glass arrived from the factory with these marks as shown. There is no sign of solvent, cleaner or other liquid or chemical that has caused the condition -- as can be seen, the scale all around these marks is fine.

As with all the equipment I list for sale, the 4100 began with a trip through the test lab for cleaning, checkout and any service needed. Here is a summary of the work performed: Disassemble and clean unit. Remove, disassemble and clean front panel including dial glass. Cleanchassis surfaces and exposed components, covers and grills. Remove and clean bottom cover. Check out unit and replace the following parts: 2 x coupling capacitors on the preamp board. Complete tuner checkout.

Following the work, here is how the unit checked out: For the amp portion, checked at rated output of 75/75 wattswhich is 24.5 volts across 8 ohms. Distortion was measured at full power, both channels driven, as follows: 20Hz, L=0.005%, R=0.011%. 1,000Hz, L=0.004%, R=0.005%. 20,000Hz, L=0.015%, R=0.013%. Amp signal-to-noise ratio measured at -90db Left and Right.

Phono preamp was checked and phono signal-to-noise was measured at -78db, both Left & Right channels, unweighted, and through both the preamp and the power amp.

FM distortion was checked at 0.06% in Mono and 0.05% in Stereo. FM Stereo separation was -47db, Left and Right.

Please refer to the pictures as this is the actual unit the buyer will receiver. Front panel labels and legends are clear. Knob flutes are sharp and clean. All controls and switches cleaned.
