Vintage 1960s Rare 8x10 BUGS DEAL by Frank Collier ART-KRAFT DEZIGN Later Print?:
$129.99

Thissale is for the ORIGINAL, VINTAGE DOUBLEWEIGHT APPX. 8x10-INCH GELATIN SILVER PHOTOGRAPHS SHOT BY MID-20TH CENTURY PHYSIQUE PHOTOGRAPHER ART-KRAFT / DE ZIGN (Frank Collier). The model is SHELDON DEAL / BUGS DEAL. This vintage print is in EXCELLENT condition. It's scary-beautiful, and clearly from the photographer's original negative, but it looks to me to be a later print possible made in the 1980s. It's stunning, regardless, but given its clarity and condition, I simply don't think there's any way it dates to the late 1950s or early 1960s, when this model's photographs were being widely published. Additionally, please note that although there is some mild edge waffling, it's nowhere near as bad as my flatbed scanner makes it appear.
FRANK COLLIER worked for a timefrom Erie, Pennsylvania, then from Norfolk, Virginia, and his photographs weremarketed under his own name, as well as under the studio names Art Kraft and DeZign. His work appeared in all the small physique magazines thatproliferated during the period in the 1950s when Collier was most active. Hiswork was compiled by publisher H. Lynn Womack into the first "annual"as part of the Grecian Guild Studio Quarterly publications, and Collieralso served as a correspondent for Tomorrow's Man and other of thelittle mags. Collier never enjoyed the success of many of his contemporaries --Athletic Model Guild (Bob Mizer), Bruce of Los Angeles (Bruce Bellas), Lon ofNew York (Lon Hanagan), et. al. -- and as a result his work is less well knownand doesn't often turn up with any form of attribution. Aside from Ed Fury, whom Collier hired for a posing session, his shots of BUGS DEAL may mark thehigh point of Collier's career, as Deal was one of the very few models ofCollier's who broke through the "noise" created by Fury, SteveWengryn and Glenn Bishop during those halcyon years. I'll pull my thick file onCollier at some point and draft a more fulsome biography as time allows.
