I don\'t know much about this item but I will do the best I can. I believe it is a Mandolin Banjo. It measures 23-3/4 inches long overall, with the head measuring 10-1/2 inches in diameter and 2-1/2 inches thick. The bridge is missing and there is a hairline crack in the heel - where the neck attaches to the head (See photos). The skin is torn, but as you will see in the photos, was signed by numerous people from different parts of the world. One of them appears to have been a Senator and another name, George Guild, who signed it twice, once from the Taft School in Watertown, Ct. and another time from Silver Bay School in Lake George, NY. There is a person from Soochow Tennessee, one from Puerto Rico, and another from Colorado. It is also marked in big red block letters, JANUS SOCIETY, which I understand was an organization in Philadelphia that published the first known LGBTQ magazine called the Drum. I do not know the significance of any of this, just that it is on there. I think the keys are bakelite or celluloid, and they are in very good condition. The peg head has a beautiful Mother of Pearl florish that fires purples, greens and reds, and also has mother of pearl dots inlaid into the fret board. It is very dirty, but appears to be all present. Since this is not a known type of item for me, please do not hesitate to ask questions. Please review the photos for a complete description.
