About Violins Of Virginia:
Welcome to my listing. I specialize in the restoration of quality handbuilt 19th century violins. During the mid to late 1800\'s German luthiers began building replica violins based on the templates of the champion violins of Cremona, Italy. Stradivarius, Guarnerius, and Amatus violins were copied and sold throughout the world during this era and are referred to as \"trade violins\". Today these 100+ year old violins have a quality of wood that has matured into a tone that can only be achieved by time.

Once in my shop, all violins go through an intensive restoration process that meticulously focuses on each individual element that plays a part in sound quality. Below is a brief description of this restoration.

-All cracks are glued, clamped, and cleated using hide glue and traditional spruce cleats. The violins top plate is removed during this process and clamped with hide glue during re-assembly. Bass bars are inspected as are all blockings and linings.

-Any open seams on the violin are glued with traditional hide glue and clamped. In addition any seams that appear weak are clamped and glued as a preventative repair.

-Violin finish. The original shellac is never removed from my violins. The time earned wear found on these violins adds to their value and beauty. The original finish is oiled and waxed in a series of stages bringing back the luster and health of the original shellac. Any scratches and scuffs experienced through the violins life remain and add to the honest and time earned wear.

-The neck of the violin is checked for proper angle and alignment. If the neck is found to be out of tolerance it is then reset to achieve proper bridge height and alignment.

-Fingerboards are freshly dressed to remove any rosin build up, ruts created by playing, and inconsistencies developed by years of wear. Fingerboards are gauged for trueness, planned, scraped, sanded, and polished to return the fingerboard to performance condition.

-All violin bridges have their feet meticulously fit to the curvature of the violin table. All bridges are choice, densely grained maple, thinned for optimum transfer of vibration, and curved so that a string isolation is consistent and doubling is easily transitioned.

-All violins have their soundposts removed and inspected. Only densely grained spruce soundposts are installed. Careful attention is paid to their orientation of grain and accurate placement just behind the bridge treble foot.

-Peg boxes are inspected for cracks and repaired accordingly. Peg holes are freshly rounded true as are the freshly turned true ebony pegs. Peg wax is freshly applied for smooth string tension and positive stops for accurate peg tuning.

-Quality ebony mother of pearl fittings have been chosen to provide the best transfer of string vibration to the sound chamber. Fine tuners are provided for all strings but recommended only for the E as vibration transfer is optimized by direct string placement to the ebony tailpiece.

-Dominant Strings are installed on my violins to provide the buyer with an \"apples to apples\" comparison to video sound files. When listening to the sound files, it is recommended that you use quality headphones to distinguish between the subtle sound qualities each violin possesses.
