What a find ! Here is a very rare vintage music box complete with ballerina and plays beautifully. I am pretty sure this was made of catalin and not bakelite because it is translucent and bakelite is opaque. Bakelite had fillers such as cotton, wood, sawdust and catalin did not. Catalin came to market around 1928 and stopped at the end of WWII or 1945. I think this piece was made around 1930, give or take a few years. I could only find two like this one and neither of them had the ballerina. She is in very good condition and dances when the music plays. To play the music just open the lid that covers the keys and it will play....close to stop the music. Be sure and not over-wind. The music box player was made by a swiss company called Lador. It is fun to watch it work so smoothly when you take the cover off. One of the legs was broken at one time and whoever put it back did a terrible job as you can see. It may be able to be repaired but as sad as it is, it is part of the history of the little box. The music is soft and clear. There are a couple of small specks on the top which is in the catalin. It measures 5 1/2\" x 4\" at the widest parts and stands 2 3/4\" tall. The tune it plays is \' O Sole Mio which was written in 1898 in the Neopolitian style of music. It is a wonderful story worth looking up. Lets keep the little ballerina dancing for years to come.Thanks for looking from The Texas Picker.
