What a wonderful conversation piece. This Miner\'s cap is from the Camp Bird Mine outside of Ouray Colorado which produced 1.5 Million Troy Ounces of Gold and 4 Million Troy Ounces of Silver. The mine began operation in 1896. This cap was most likely used in the 1910 to 1915 time frame. The cap comes with a jar of caroffere which I used to test the lamp. The lamp has a reflector and functional striker. I tested it and it works. The cap has some tears, discoloration and stains - look at the pictures for the detail.Caroffere lamps were worn on soft caps. Invented around 1910, the small caroffere cap lamp had several advantages over an oil-wick cap lamp. The acetylene gas that powered the flame burned cleanly, relieving the miner from the smoke and soot from oil lamps. The flame from the acetylene gas burned brighter than oil-wick cap lamps. Caroffere lamps often came with a reflector, allowing this brighter flame to be directed and giving the miner a wider range of light. The drawback of the caroffere lamp was that its open flame was still capable of igniting methane gas in mines. Please read the payment instructions before paying. The shipping cost may be an inflated estimate.
