It would be difficult to find a more iconic owl mask - the colors are closer to blood dry and screen door green from the 40s. The photos of the interior show the master hand at work. Plain but elegant and imposing. Mask measures over 10 x 13 and is in very good condition. I sat and wondered about buying it for a few hours- there were others. In the end I consulted with a friend by phone, who incidentally has one of Livingston\'s transformation masks (and many many pieces of older Haida art) and without knowing the maker we decided that the form warranted purchase. I cannot tell you how excited i was to see the signature.... just thrilled. Livingston has made a life from his love of Pacific Northwest Coast first peoples - His studied w the Hunt family and (as his bio from a gallery website) states, they opened a gallery together.
This may be the only mask created by John Livingston available for purchase. All others have been sold, far as I can tell. I believe that it crosses and bridges both form and cultural boundaries and as such would be equally as pleasing to a young lover of Danish Furniture as it would to an old school collector. created in timeless style 1993. The last two pictures show a minor bit of damage- please do not ignore them. The magnification makes it look more problematic than it is.
