Vintage Packard Bell 8 Transistor Radio Model AR-851this is the model that was used in the TV showGilligan\'s IslandThis is a vintage Packard Bell AR-851 AM 8 Transistor RadioLet me give you a little background on the Packard Bell AR-851 radio and why it is so sought after....In 1964 CBS debuted a television show featuring 7 Castaways and their attempts to survive their shipwreck on a tiny uncharted islandafter what started out as a \"three hour tour....a three hour tour......\".......thatshow was....GILLIGAN\'S ISLANDToday, it is widely accepted that GILLIGAN\'S ISLAND has become a cultural icon of the 1960\'sWhile shipwrecked...one of their only ways that they were able to stay in touch with what was going on \"back home\"was a Transistor Radio that they would listen to....that radio....the Packard Bell AR-851
This radio is a working Packard Bell AR-851...all original parts and componentsMade in Japan in 1964...it has been tested and does work!Radio works....but theradio volume only goes so loud....not as loud as it originally did...and volume dial can be \"touchy\" and create static when adjusting at times (so typical with AM radios)The back panel has 8 TRANSISTOR JAPAN as part of the molded case (inside recessed top \"finger hold\")The radio that was used in the show was modified by the prop department to have a handle and an antenna(AM radios (such as this) do not need an antenna to receive a signal)I have added the handle and the antenna so that this radio would matchthe one used in the filming of Gilligan\'s Island
This radio \"case\" is the original \"off white\" or ivory color that was used in the show(2 AR-851 radios were used in the show...the one you saw most of the time was an off white/ivory one, the other was more of a tan color)This is the \"off-white/ivory\" color....the one used in the majority of the TV scenesCase is in excellent condition with no MAJOR damageThere some very minor \"issues\" with this unit...---- there is a very slight crack on right side panel towards the front that extends approx 1\" from the right side bottom edge up towards the top---- very very tiny \"chip\" of the plastic front piece missing on the lower left panel towards the very bottom (can only be seen up close and from side)---- there are no \"Battery Sleeves\" with this unit (originally this came with 2 plastic tubes, or battery sleeves that held 2 \"D\" batteries each(batteries are NOT included in this sale)---- there is a small discoloration \"rub\" mark on the right side panel measures approx 3/8\" x 1/2\"---- there is a very slight discoloration spot on the back panel just to the right of the battery compartment door---- the red coloration of the letter P on the metal plate by the tuning dial is faded (as is the case with most of these radios of this age)
I took the case off to get a picture of the \"inner workings\" of the radio so you could see how clean this one is (see pics)Being over 50 years old there this has the typical minor signs of surface wear as would be expected...minor scuffs, marks, nicks, etc.Antenna extends 5.5\" above radio when fully collapsed and can extend to 56\"Again....this unit is in remarkable condition!THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE ITEM!!!These are SUPER RARE and HARD TO COME BY....Especially in the original off-white/ivory color...working...all original components....with the \"show modifications\"You will not see another one out there........This would be an awesome addition to someone\'s Gilligan Island Collection...and or Vintage Radio CollectionIf you have any questions or need additional information, please contact me PRIOR to sale ending.
