Vintage Pr. Portuguese Caldas da Rainha Palissy Majolica Lobsters Lagostas RARE:
$146.50

If you\'re a collector of art pottery, majolica, or crustacean collectables then you know you\'ve found something special in this rare pair of Portuguese Palissy majolica lobsters! Made in the Portuguese city of Caldas da Rainha of earthenware pottery decorated with brightly colored glazes, these two lobsters (in Portuguese: lagostas) were typically displayed in a Portuguese home along with a matching plate decorated with lifelike earthenware seafood. The lobsters were a part of the local cuisine as well as a frequent subject for the city\'s famous pottery industry. This pair came from an estate here in Providence, Rhode Island -- a major destination of immigrants from Portugal in the 19th and 20th centuries. The family is downsizing their collection, and finally parting with what had been beloved keepsakes displayed in their kitchen. Each lobster measures 8.5\" long, 4.25\" wide, 2 3/8\" tall, and weighs 9.5 oz. One lobster has the original price tag on the tail for \"35.00\", presumably in Portuguese escudos. They are not marked with the name of the pottery, but are identical to other examples from the same collection we sold recently on marked as being from Caldas da Rainha. Each are wonderfully depicted with accuracy and a touch of whimsy. Both date from the early to mid twentieth century, and are in excellent vintage condition, remarkably with no breaks, cracks, repairs or missing pieces. Each has a hole on the underside that was likely a vent for the firing process but can now serve for hanging on a wall. It is rare to find these Caldas lobsters on , and especially in the U.S.! If you\'re a collector of Portuguese art pottery then you\'ll love this incredible pair of lifelike lagostas! We are starting this sale at $9.99 with . Good luck offerding!
